What is the Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)?

The Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a residence permit that allows qualified professionals from non-European Union (EU) countries to legally enter Germany to search for employment. It was introduced to address Germany's shortage of skilled workers and to attract qualified professionals from around the world.

Benefits of the Opportunity Card

  • Legally enter Germany to search for a job.

  • Stay in Germany for up to one year.

  • Participate in trial employment (Probearbeit) while looking for a job.

  • Work part-time for up to 20 hours per week.

  • Apply for a work-related residence permit once you find suitable employment and meet the legal requirements.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants are generally required to meet the following conditions:

  • Hold at least a two-year vocational qualification or a university degree.

  • Have a qualification that is recognized or generally eligible for recognition in Germany.

  • Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves.

  • Hold a valid passport.

  • Have valid health insurance.

Language Requirements

Applicants generally need one of the following language qualifications:

  • German language proficiency at A1 level or higher

  • English language proficiency at B2 level or higher
